During his lifetime he became famous for his larger than life exploits embellished by stage plays and penny novels. He grew up in East Tennessee and was elected to the Tennessee state legislature and eventually the U. S. Congress in 1827. He vehemently opposed many of the policies of President Andrew Jackson, especially the Indian Removal Act, which led to his defeat in the 1831. He
